The illegal trading of wildlife got restricted – Shhab Uddin
Shahab Uddin, the Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (Bangladesh), said that “The government is working hard to curb the illegal trade of wildlife.”
Stating that strategies getting identified to eradicate illegal wildlife trade regulators, he said that “We are working to enhance the capacity of law enforcement agencies to detect, identify and prosecute wildlife crimes.”
He spoke as the chief guest at the inaugural function of a meeting titled “Consultation Meeting on Strengthening Law Enforcement to prevent illegal trading of wildlife” organized by the Forest Department and Wildlife Conservation Society, Bangladesh, at a hotel in the capital.
The environment ministry further said that” A joint strategic plan will get formulated among the concerned sectors to curb the illegal trade in wildlife. Initiatives will get adopted to effectively implement laws, programs, and projects enacted to curb wildlife crime.”
He called upon the concerned organizations to take practical and timely steps to eradicate the illegal wildlife trade regulators, adding that efforts should intensify to raise public awareness about the negative consequences of wildlife crime. Strict punishment will ensure by bringing the wildlife criminals to justice.
Under the presidency of Md. Mostafa Kamal, secretary of the Environment Ministry, Habibun Nahar Deputy Minister, Iqbal Abdullah Harun, Additional Secretary (Administration), Md. Amir Hossain Chowdhury, Chief Conservator of Forests, and Jahangir Alam, Country Representative of the Wildlife Conservation Society, were present.
Officials from various organizations, including USAID (United States Agency for International Development), UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) and NGO bureaus, and officials from various ministries and law enforcement agencies spoke on what needs to do to strengthen law enforcement to curb the illegal wildlife trade.
