AHM Mustafa Kamal, Finance Minister of Bangladesh, has said, “The government will build more alternative energy-based power plants due to the cancellation of coal-fired power plants.”

The finance minister informed reporters after the Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement meeting.

The minister further added, “In keeping with the international community, six environmentally friendly coal-fired power projects have been scrapped.

The term of 4 Quick Rental Power Plants has been extended for another 1 to 5 years at the meeting of the National Procurement Committee.

The term has been extended due to the withdrawal from the construction of coal-fired power plants. The extension will not cost the government anything since the term has been extended on a “no power, no payment” basis.”

Responding to a question on rising electricity prices, he said, “We have not received any such proposal at the moment. If the price goes up, we will inform.”

The Economic Affairs Committee accepted one proposal, and the Procurement Committee approved twelve.

The Procurement Committee received five proposals from the Department of Power, three from the Ministry of Shipping, two from the Ministry of Railways, one from the Ministry of Food, one from the Department of Health Education and Family Welfare, and one from the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.

The total amount of the 12 proposals approved by this committee is BDT.72,540 crores.
