Bangladesh will work to mitigate climate risks with international and regional cooperation: says Information Minister, Bangladesh

Bangladesh wants to work with other countries to solve environmental issues like climate change, loss of biodiversity, and marine pollution.

The country’s Information Minister, Mr. Hasan Mahmud, made the statement and said, “The country will use innovative green technology and renewable energy for this purpose.”

The Minister provided reassurance during a discussion on ‘Green Initiatives and Global Challenges’ at the EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum in Stockholm.

This happened recently. Estonia, Maldives, Denmark, the European Commission, and some countries of the EU and Indo-Pacific region participated in it. These things were said in a notification from the Ministry of Information.

Broadcasting Minister said, “Climate change has emerged as the biggest threat to sustainable development. Extreme temperatures, erratic rains, floods and droughts, intense tropical cyclones, rising sea levels, ocean acidification, etc., have severely negatively impacted the lives and livelihoods of billions of people, especially in the developing countries of the Indo-Pacific region.”

Hasan Mahmud said, “Bangladesh’s carbon emissions are less than 0.47 percent of the global ratio, but we are helpless victims of environmental change.

Due to climate change and natural disasters, our coastal country is one of the world’s most vulnerable nations, ranking seventh. We face many challenges due to our location in the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean.

The Information Minister highlighted various initiatives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government at the round table to overcome this situation.

He said that since 2010, Bangladesh has been implementing 800 projects with funding of 480 million US dollars from its climate trust fund. The government is working to maximize the use of renewable energy through the Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan for 2022-41.

The Minister said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was committed to achieving 40 percent of our energy from renewable sources at COP 26.

We’ve provided solar power to over 20 million individuals by installing 6 million solar-home systems. This is the biggest project of its kind in the world.

Bangladesh has accepted the invitation of EU countries to join the Green Partnership, a global leader in renewable energy innovation and deployment. Climate-prone countries, including Bangladesh, expect technical and financial support and investment from developed nations.

Bangladesh seeks partnership with the EU and other countries to access the $100 billion developed nations pledged to launch the balance and loss fund. The fund will focus on environmental change adaptation and risk mitigation.
