Urban forestry project will be implemented in Dhaka to reduce temperature: Environment Minister, Bangladesh

Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Minister of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Bangladesh, said that the urban forestry project will be implemented in Dhaka to reduce the temperature. That is why special satellite images are being created. Through which it will be determined where to plant trees.

He made these remarks during the speech as the guest of honor at the inauguration ceremony of Dhaka North and South City Corporation’s Climate Action Plan. The ceremony took place at Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building of Dhaka University on May 20, 2024.

The minister said that a certain amount of greenery is needed to keep the environment of a city livable, so an urban afforestation project will be implemented in Dhaka to keep the temperature bearable.



The climate action plan will greatly affect Dhaka’s environment, according to the environment minister. He also mentioned that it will help create a cleaner, greener, and livelier Dhaka.

Although there are two city corporations in Dhaka, this action plan will be implemented as one Dhaka. The Dhaka declaration by two city corporations is an important decision to lessen the effects of climate change in a city with a population of twenty million people.

Saber Chowdhury mentioned that the journey towards making the environment sustainable has begun with the launch of the Dhaka Climate Action Plan (CAP). CAP works together to improve life in Dhaka and tackle climate change challenges.

He urged the developed countries to stand by Bangladesh in combating climate change.

Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas, Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation also spoke at the event. Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam, Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation, A.S.M. Maqsood Kamal, Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, Mark Watts, Executive Director of C40 Cities and Zayeda Khatun, Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation were also resent on the occasion.
