Government determined to protect environment: Environment Advisor of Bangladesh
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, a leading environmentalist and advisor in Bangladesh’s Interim Government, in charge of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh and the Ministry of Water Resources (MOWR), Bangladesh, said that the Bangladesh government is determined to set an example in controlling air, noise, plastic and river pollution.
She made this statement during a courtesy visit from Netherlands Ambassador Irma van Duren to the advisor at her Secretariat on November 28. They discussed enhancing the Netherlands’ cooperation with Bangladesh on environmental conservation, water management, and pollution control.
They also discussed ongoing initiatives to combat climate change and environmental degradation and possible future cooperation.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan said that the government’s efforts are continuing to ensure a clean and healthy environment for the people.
She noted that the government is implementing programs to ban polythene bags and mentioned that the management plan might be updated to address new challenges.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan emphasized the crucial role of local communities in environmental conservation, particularly in protecting rivers, which are vital for the country’s biodiversity. She stressed that community involvement is essential for effective clean-up efforts.
Irma van Dooren announced that the Netherlands is ready to assist Bangladesh with climate change and water resource management.
The event was attended by the Secretary of Environment, the Secretary of Water Resources, the Director General of the Bangladesh Water Development Board, and senior embassy officials. Both sides expressed hope for further cooperation in the field of environmental conservation and water resource management in the future.
The Netherlands’ experience in water management and Bangladesh’s commitment to sustainable development are considered as a strong foundation for cooperation.
