Workshop on Climate Change at Bangladesh Agriculture University (BAU)

 A workshop titled ‘Climate Change and Climate Finance: National and International Perspectives’ was held at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU).

The workshop, organized by the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) and supervised by BAU’s Aquaculture Department, took place at 10:30 am on Sunday, January 5, in the Faculty of Fisheries gallery.

The main objective of the workshop was to enhance the capacity of Bangladesh’s National Designated Authorities (NDAs) and DIRECT ACCESS ENTITIES (DAES) so that they can easily utilize the funds of the Green Climate Fund (GCF).

Professor Dr. Md Rafiqul Islam Sardar, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries at BAU, was the chief guest at the event. The workshop was chaired by Dr. Shahriar Hashem, Principal Associate Professor, Aquaculture Department, BAU.

Professor Dr. Md Abdus Salam from the Aquaculture Department, Professor Dr. Md Shahjahan from the Fisheries Management Department, and Dr. ABM Arif Hasan Khan Robin from the Cultivation and Plant Breeding Department, along with other teachers and researchers from the university were present at the event.



Dr. Fazle Rabbi Sadek Ahmed, Deputy Managing Director of PKSF presented the keynote address. At that time, he said that the current ongoing GCF-funded Extended Community Climate Change Project-Drought, Extended Community Climate Change Project-Flood, Sustainable Housing and Livelihood Support for Vulnerable People in Coastal Areas of Bangladesh, Encouraging Private Sector Investment through Adoption of Energy-efficient Technology and Equipment in Textile and Ready-Made Garment Sector, Global Clean Cooking Program, Increasing the Adaptation Capacity of Coastal Communities, Especially Women, to Adapt to Climate Change-induced Salinity, Main streaming Climate Resilient Infrastructure, and Direct Storage of Rainwater as Groundwater, and discussed in detail about a total of nine research activities. The objective of each research work is to conserve the environment.

He discussed strategies with workshop researchers for utilizing national and international resources to tackle climate change and related conservation research challenges.

He highlighted the types of research beneficial for climate conservation and ongoing efforts to protect the environment. He also emphasized the active participation of university students in these activities.

At the end of the workshop, a discussion session was held with teachers and students. Participants shared suggestions for improving ongoing projects and research.

Professor Dr. Md Rafiqul Islam Sardar, the chief guest at the workshop, stated that Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The impact of this change on our agriculture, fisheries, forest resources, and overall biodiversity is clear.

This workshop aims to enhance the capacity of our National Designated Authorities (NDAs) and direct access institutions, which is crucial for tackling our country’s climate challenges.
