Crocodile Juliet lays 52 eggs at the Karmjal Wildlife Breeding Center, Bangladesh.
Juliet, the saltwater crocodile, has laid 52 eggs in the Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Center situated at East Sundarbans, Bagerhat, Bangladesh.
On 29/05/2020 morning, the crocodile Juliet laid her eggs on the bank of the pond of the crocodile project. This time, Juliet has given 15 eggs in total. Last year, Juliet laid 44 eggs.
But no baby was born from Juliet and Pilpil’s eggs in this crocodile breeding centre for three years. That’s why the old male crocodile named Romeo was replaced with a new young crocodile named Alexander in the same pond with Juliet and Pilpil a year ago.
This time, the forest department hopes that the baby will hatch from the crocodile’s eggs at this crocodile breeding centre.
Sundarbans Chandpai Range Karamjal Wildlife Breeding and Tourism Center Officer (OC) Md. Azad Kabir said,” This (Friday) morning Juliet laid 52 eggs on the bank of the pond of the crocodile project.
After collecting the eggs, 14 of them were placed in Juliet’s laying house for hatching, 26 in the old incubator, and 12 in the new incubator. In the next 75 to 90 days, the eggs will hatch.
Hopefully another mother crocodile Pilpil will lay eggs in a few days.”
Muhammad Belayet Hossain, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the Bagerhat East Sundarbans Division, said, “The crocodile breeding centre at Karamjal currently has a total of 195 crocodiles, both large and small.
Among them, two female crocodiles named Juliet and Pilpil and a male crocodile named Alexander are breeding crocodiles in Karamjal breeding centre.
The Forest Department started this crocodile breeding centre at Karamjal in 2000 with the aim of breeding crocodiles of endangered saltwater species in the Sundarbans.
The Sundarbans Division has already released 96 adult crocodiles from the breeding centre into the rivers of the Sundarbans.
