Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will deliver a virtual speech at the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York today. Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would deliver her pre-scheduled recorded speech to the General Assembly at the UN headquarters today at 8.00 pm Bangladesh time and at 10 am Newyork time.

Following the footsteps of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Prime Minister will deliver this speech in Bengali this year as every year. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made history by delivering his first speech in Bengali on September 25, 1974, at the 29th session of the UN General Assembly.

Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen told a virtual press briefing on September 21 that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will highlight several important issues in her speech, including the COVID 19 infection, the Rohingya crisis, and the climate.

He said that the Prime Minister would highlight the COVID 19 infection situation, distribution of vaccines, and its impact on migrant workers and remittances in her speech. Besides, she will raise the issue of climate change as President of the Climate Vulnerable Forum.

The foreign minister added, the Prime Minister called upon the international community to stand by the Rohingya issue and continue its efforts to resolve the crisis based on his four-point proposal in her speech.

The Prime Minister had earlier submitted this four-point proposal at the 74th session of the UN General Assembly.

The foreign minister also said, “The Prime Minister will highlight Bangladesh’s success in tackling the COVID-19 situation.

She also highlights in her speech on the implementation of SDGs, the establishment of women’s empowerment and rights, poverty alleviation, counter-terrorism, curbing drug smuggling, economic progress, sustainable democracy, good governance, and the role of Bangladesh in establishing world peace in her speech.”

The 75th session of the UN General Assembly started on September 21 in a virtual manner. This year’s theme is “We want the future, we need the United Nations: by reaffirming our commitment to diversity.”

This is the first time in the 65-year history of the United Nations that world leaders are taking part in the virtual session of the UN General Assembly, the world’s highest forum, due to the global Covid-19.
