PM suggests construction of adequate culvert-bridges to save Swamps, Haors and Baors

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has suggested constructing adequate culverts and bridges to save swamps, Haors, and Baors. She suggested at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday, October 27, 2020.

[Haor-wetland ecosystem in the northeastern part of Bangladesh which physically is a bowl or saucer-shaped shallow depression and Baor dead arm of a river in the Moribund Delta case of the Ganges; also called oxbow lake. It appears as a saucer-shaped depression.]

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked to pay special attention to ensure the proper water flow during road construction. In that case, to save the swamp, haor or she suggested constructing adequate culverts and bridges.



Three projects were approved at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), Bangladesh held at Ganobhaban on Tuesday (October 27, 2020).

Out of the total three projects, two are revised, and one is new. Both fixed are from the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges. These are Sonapur (Noakhali), Sonagazi (Feni), Jowarganj (Chattogram) Road Development (Second Amendment) Project.

Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister, and Chairperson of ECNEC, presided over the meeting. Md. Asadul Islam, Senior Secretary of the Planning Division, presented the project’s overall theme at the NEC conference room of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

Mamun-al-Rashid, Secretary and Member of the Physical Infrastructure division of the Planning Commission, Nasima Begum, Secretary and Member r of Industries and Energy Division, and others were present at the press conference.

The project’s original cost was 172.65 crore, the first amendment was 185.96 crore in the second amendment, the cost was increased to 293.05 crores. The project started in September 2015, supposed to be completed in June 2018, but now it has been extended to June 2021.

The project’s original cost was Tk. 11,899 crores “Sasek Road Connection Project-II, Elenga-Hatikumrul-Rangpur Highway Upgraded to Four Lane (First Amendment).” In the first amendment, Taka 4763.37 crore has been increased to become Taka 16662.38 crore.

The project started in September 2015, supposed to be completed in December 2024, but now it is rescheduled to complete by August 2021.

The new project ‘Road Safety including Improvement of Traffic Infrastructures in Dhaka North City Corporation Area,’ is of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. It will cost Taka. 319.23 crore. The project will be implemented from October 2020 to June 2023.
