Bangladesh has been dealing with the effects of climate change for a long time
Bangladesh has been dealing with the effects of climate change for a long time. Many countries of the world can use our experience of dealing with climate change, and the government can inform all those countries about this.
Speakers said this at a seminar titled ‘Climate Diplomacy: Obstacles and Opportunities for Bangladesh’ organized by the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies on October 17, 2022, in Dhaka.
Professor Salimul Haque, a world-renewed Climatologist, said, “Germany has recognized Bangladesh’s experience with climate change.
We can teach many countries in the developed world, including the United States, and Germany, how to deal with climate change. Bangladesh can take global leadership to inform others about this. Earlier, Bangladesh has known as a vulnerable country.
However, now we are trying to handle it well and getting results. So, it is time to recognize ourselves as a survivor country instead of being vulnerable.”
Stating the critical role of diplomats in communicating the country’s success to others, he said, “A diplomat from any country, whenever they get an opportunity if they tell the people of other countries what about Bangladesh is doing about climate change? It will be more publicized.”
Taking part in the discussion, Shamsul Alam, State Minister for Planning, said, “Climate change is a security issue, and it needs to be discussed regularly in the United Nations Security Council.”
Pointing out the need for full implementation of the Paris Agreement, he said, “For this, developing countries should give affordable technology.”
