Cox’s Bazar youth’s new demands to combat climate change

Young environmental activists in Cox’s Bazar held a ‘climate strike’ to demand an end to fossil fuel financing, more renewable energy, and greater investment in sustainable agriculture to combat climate change and protect the environment.

Activista Cox’s Bazar, part of ActionAid’s youth platform, held a ‘global climate strike’ at the Cox’s Bazar Press Club on December 19 at 11 am. Earlier, these young people took out a rally from the Cox’s Bazar Shaheed Minar and came to the Press Club.

During this, they were seen holding various types of placards related to climate protection. Slogans such as “Fix Finance,” “Invest in Renewable Energy,” “Stop Harmful Agricultural Investments,” “Climate Justice Now,” “Fund Our Future,” and “Pay for Loss and Damage” emphasize the need for financial responsibility in addressing climate issues.

Banners read: “Invest in Climate-Resilient Sustainable Agriculture,” “We Want Eco-Friendly Tourism,” and “No Development That Destroys the Environment.”

Activists from the ActionAid Bangladesh Youth Platform addressed the pressing issue of climate change at the press club. Host Jahanara Akhtar said that we need to stop harmful fuels and find environmentally friendly alternatives.

Climate activist Tarek urged the elimination of plastic products, such as plastic banners, at meetings and seminars in Cox’s Bazar. In addition, Cox’s Bazar activist Aqib demanded an end to the destruction of parabens and spoke about increasing afforestation.

Young climate advocate Simon emphasized the need to halt global funding for harmful fossil fuels and urged world leaders to take action for a better future.

ActionAid officer Tafhimul Jannat Sifat expressed support for young climate activists in Cox’s Bazar, stating that they are united in addressing climate issues.

That day’s demand from the global climate strike to halt fossil fuel financing will boost the climate justice movement.

Over 500 young climate activists from 15 groups, including ActionAid Bangladesh and Activista Bangladesh, joined the strike to demand justice and raise awareness about the climate crisis.

At the same time, young volunteers from 19 districts and 7 local youth hubs, including Satkhira, Bagerhat, Noakhali, Chittagong, Kurigram, Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Jamalpur, Sunamganj, Gazipur, Chandpur, Rajshahi, Kushtia, Netrokona, Cox’s Bazar, Teknaf and Barguna of Bangladesh also expressed solidarity with the Global Climate Strike.

Expressing solidarity with this movement of young climate activists, Md Nazmul Ahsan, Young People Team Leader of ActionAid Bangladesh said. He said, “We are expressing our solidarity with the voices of young people for investing in fossil fuels.”

“We and the younger generation should be on the path to a green transition now. We demand investment to address the vulnerability and loss and damage of the most climate-stressed people in Bangladesh and around the world,” he added.
