Children and disabled people should take into priority during the Climate emergency period

Ainun Nishat, Professor Emeritus, Brac University, said, “We cannot leave anyone behind in times of disaster. Women, children and disable people should always be at the forefront.” He was addressing in a webinar meeting organized by BRAC Humanitarian Programme recently.

He further added, “If we are in Coastal Zone or in Noakhali coastal area of Bangladesh and suddenly imposed a disaster alert or signal of 6/7 or 10, we should extends our hands to the peoples who have impaired vison or have any sort of disability to move to the safe Zone or Cyclone Shelter. We have to be more careful about disabled people rather than left them behind during a disaster,” he added.

Sajedul Hasan, Director, BRAC Humanitarian Programme, said, “For operating humanitarian activities, BRAC has developed a Global Humanitarian Strategy.”

 “The strategy contain what should be our role and goal during a disaster. BRAC has developed a standard operating procedures (SOP) with inbuilt safety and security measures for Bangladesh and other countries,” he explained.

 “BRAC is also providing training to its staff around the world. If there is any major disaster strikes held, BRAC’s Emergency Response Team will act as a specialized force,” he assured.

Abu Sadat Moniruzzaman Khan, head of the Climate Change Programme (CCP), BRAC, said, “We still did not able to understand clearly the issues related to the nature and the climate. However, the BRAC Humanitarian Programme’s activities has introduced some new innovations. These are updated and well adapted with the climate change.”

The programme was hosted by Imamul Azam Shahi, Programme Head, and BRAC Humanitarian Programme. Hasina Akhter, Area Director, BRAC Humanitarian Programme, Shyam Sundar Saha, Programme Head, IDP, Bubli Suraiya, among others were participated in the Webinar meeting.
