The Global Crisis of ‘Forever Chemicals’ (PFAS) in Rainwater: A New Threat to Human Health

Once, rainwater was considered the purest form of water on Earth. But due to modern industrialization, that rainwater has now become severely contaminated with dangerous chemicals.

A recent study by Stockholm University revealed that from Antarctica to the Tibetan Plateau, rainwater everywhere contains hazardous levels of ‘Forever Chemicals’ or PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances).

Sources and Harmful Effects (Problems)

  • Origin of PFAS: These are man‑made chemicals widely used in non‑stick cookware, waterproof clothing, firefighting foam, and food packaging.
  • Indestructible Nature: PFAS never break down or decompose in the environment or the human body, which is why they are called “Forever Chemicals.”
  • Health Risks: Through rainwater, PFAS infiltrates groundwater and agricultural land. Excessive exposure in humans increases risks of thyroid disorders, weakened immunity, and liver cancer.

Global Legal Action

  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the European Union have recently passed strict laws to regulate PFAS levels in drinking water.
  • Industries are being compelled to adopt safer alternative chemicals.

Conclusion

This atmospheric contamination proves that environmental problems are not confined within national borders. Unless PFAS production is completely banned worldwide, it will become a long‑term poison for human civilization.
