The Silent Grip of Climate Change on Coastal Women’s Maternal Health: Salinity and the Preeclampsia Crisis

Women in Bangladesh’s coastal regions are among the largest and most silent victims of sea‑level rise caused by climate change.

In coastal districts such as Satkhira, Khulna, and Bagerhat, excessive salinity in drinking water has led to a dangerous increase in preeclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy) among pregnant women. Recent medical research has identified this environmental health crisis as a national emergency.

Research findings and health risks: According to icddr,b and international climate researchers, salinity levels in coastal waters are many times higher than the limits set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Risks to maternal and infant mortality: Excessive sodium intake raises the risk of high blood pressure, seizures, and kidney failure in pregnant women. As a result, rates of preterm births and maternal deaths have risen alarmingly.

Social impact: Due to the lack of potable water, women must walk miles every day to collect fresh water, placing extreme physical and mental strain on them during pregnancy.

Response measures: To address this crisis, government and private initiatives are installing large rainwater‑harvesting plants in coastal villages. Community‑level safe drinking water is also being pursued through solar‑powered desalination plants.

Climate change is not only damaging nature; it is striking at the roots of human survival. Immediate provision of permanent and sustainable safe drinking‑water solutions is essential to protect the health of coastal women.
