Dhaka’s air is becoming incredibly polluted daily. According to Health Effects Institute, and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, Dhaka is the 5th worst city in the world.

The Stamford University Atmospheric Pollution Research Center (CAPS) has regularly investigated air pollution in Dhaka. The organization’s studies showed that the first two months of this year’s air pollution in Dhaka exceeded that of the last seven years.

Among these, January 2023 took first place, shattering all previous records from the last seven years for the most polluted period. Throughout this month, there were ten very unhealthy days. The remaining days they lacked even a single day of fresh air.

However, the air pollution in February was still relatively high compared to the previous seven years, despite a modest decrease from January.

As a result, February became the second-most polluted month in seven years, trailing only January in terms of pollution.

According to the observation of the first 23 days of this month, every single one of those days it polluted Dhaka’s air. In addition, it also recorded three extremely unhealthy days, 14 very unhealthy days, and six unhealthy days.

Dhaka’s air quality is currently 231 AQI on average, an 8% rise in air pollution from the previous year. According to Caps’s analysis of the past seven years’ air quality averages, there was an average of 221 AQI.

According to Professor Dr. Ahmad Kamruzzaman Majumder, the director of the Atmospheric Pollution Studies Center (CAPS), the air quality will improve slightly now that less infrastructure construction is being done.

In addition, he noted that Dhaka’s air pollution is now primarily caused by garbage burning. From harmful to incredibly toxic levels, the city’s air is being gradually deteriorated by it.
