The ongoing climate conference is discussing the formal end of fossil fuel production
Countries participating in the ongoing COP28 climate conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, are considering the issue of officially phasing out fossil fuel production.
Discussions are underway to include the issue in the final agreement of the UN summit to combat global warming. A draft agreement was reached on December 6, 2023.
The UN Climate Agency has published a draft of a possible final agreement for the COP-28 conference. There are fossil fuel issues to consider in the agreement.
Discussions have begun over whether countries will eventually agree to phase out fossil fuel production or continue to fight to make a move.
The draft agreement lays down three options.
The first is to phase out the production of fossil fuels in an orderly manner.
The second is to call for accelerated efforts to phase out unsustainable fossil fuel production.
Third, the poison of phasing out alternative fossil fuels must be avoided.
Representatives from about 200 countries will consider the options. Executives from several major energy companies presented their case for oil and gas at the keynote address at COP28. They emphasize climate-friendly measures such as reducing the use of the greenhouse gas methane.
A study published on December 9, 2023, by Global Carbon Budget, revealed that fossil fuels are speeding up climate change and causing extreme weather events.
Carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels will reach record highs this year. And the biggest role in this will be the use of coal, oil, and gas in India and China.
Scientists from 90 institutions around the world participated in the report. In 2023, the world is expected to emit 36.8 billion tons of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels, which is 1.1% more than the previous year.
