Pope Francis, 87, arrived in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, on September 2, for his longest visit to the Asia-Pacific region.
After staying in the country for a few days, he will go to Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore. These countries face risks from rising sea levels and more intense heat waves and storms due to climate change.
For 11 years since he was elected Pope, Pope Francis has been emphasizing on solving environmental problems around the world. In a video message, Pope Francis said that necessary steps must be taken to combat climate change.
Not only environmental action, but social, economic and political action must be taken. The poor are the most affected by the consequences of various disasters. They are forced to leave their homes due to floods, heat waves or droughts.
