Legal action will be taken against polythene producers: Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, a leading environmentalist and advisor in Bangladesh’s Interim Government, in charge of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh and the Ministry of Water Resources (MOWR), Bangladesh, said that legal action will be taken against polythene producers by listing them.
The district administration, city corporation, and Department of Environment of Bangladesh will conduct mobile courts to address hill cutting, air pollution, and the use of banned polythene.
She made this statement as the chief guest at a meeting on January 6 focused on stopping the use of banned polythene and preventing plastic pollution in Chattogram.
She said that signboards will be put up on hills and patrol duties will be increased to stop hill cutting. Hill owners will receive warning letters prohibiting them from cutting down hills. Action will be taken against anyone who violates the law.
The advisor also said that legal action will be taken against polythene producers by listing them. The use of barcodes should be made mandatory on packaging products.
She highlighted the importance of implementing mobile courts in markets and supermarkets while also taking action to halt trucks carrying polythene.
Dr. Shahadat Hossain, the Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation; Dr. Farhina Ahmed, Secretary of MOEFCC, Bangladesh; Md Nazrul Islam, Secretary of Local Government and Rural Development and Chairman of Chattogram Development Authority, along with other officials, spoke at the meeting.
Officials from government and non-government organizations, environmental groups, business people, and media representatives took part in the online meeting for the Chattogram administrative division.
They called for law enforcement and awareness raising to stop the use of banned polythene.
