Neom’s ‘The Line’: Is the desert mirror breaking?

Saudi Arabia’s 170-kilometer-long dream city ‘The Line’ is facing a harsh reality in April 2026. International media reports suggest that the grandiose 170-kilometer plan could be scaled down to just 2.4 kilometers.

With 2026 approaching, investors and architects are rethinking the project’s feasibility.

Why the backtracking? After investigation found that the Saudi government is being careful because the project costs a lot (about $1 trillion) and oil prices change a lot.

Many major construction companies have canceled their contracts. However, Saudi authorities are claiming that it is not canceled but will be implemented in a ‘phased manner’.

Interesting fact for readers: The city was supposed to be 500 meters high and 200 meters wide—without cars or roads. The question now comes up in 2026: will people really agree to live in a ‘closed eco-system’ in the desert?
