Two-round Flood Threat in Bangladesh

The monsoon has started in the country with heavy rains. The monsoon wind that entered Bangladesh through Teknaf three days ago has spread all over the country, including Dhaka.
This rain will continue till next October.
However, as per the forecast of the Meteorological Department, there may be continuous rain for another three to four days.
However, meteorologists of the Meteorological Department said that it has been raining more frequently since the beginning of the monsoon. It may be raining intermittently for the rest of the time.
On the other hand, heavy rains have also started in Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya of India upstream of Bangladesh.
In these states, there is a regular rainfall of 50 to 100 millimeters.
Floods could begin in at least two river basins in the country later this month due to a combination of inland and upstream rains. Another flood may occur in August and September.
Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, the Executive Engineer of the Flood Forecasting & Warning Centre, told the Prothom Alo that it had rained more before the monsoon.
It may be more rain this time. So there may be one round of flooding in late June and another round between August and September. And this time, if it rains too much, the flood swells may be spread more naturally.
According to the weather in Bangladesh, monsoon winds usually enter Bangladesh in the first week of June. And it takes until October to get out. Even before the onset of this monsoon, the water level in the country’s rivers was higher than usual.
This is because the month before the monsoon, i.e., the first week of May and June, the rainfall was 20 percent higher than usual.
Thirteen mm of rain was recorded between 6 am and 3 pm on Saturday. It has also received up to 10 to 90 mm of rain in other parts of the country.
The highest rainfall in the country was 93 mm in Hatia.
Meanwhile, strong winds are blowing along the coast of the country due to monsoon winds. The wind speed is 40 to 50 kilometers per hour.
As a result, Chittagong, Mongla, and Payra ports have been asked to display warning number 3. Ships stationed in the Bay of Bengal have been asked to be careful and safe near the coast.
Meteorologist Bazlur Rashid said to the Prothom Alo that the monsoon wind seems to be a bit strong this time. As a result, it may rain intermittently for most of June. It is also raining in upstream India. The combination of these two water flow can increase river water.
According to flood experts, the country is usually flooded from a sudden surge in Haor in early May. Then another flood occurred in mid-July.
The floods started mainly in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna basin through Kurigram-Rangpur-Jamalpur and spread over a wide area from Sirajganj to Manikganj.
Another basin starts from the Lalmonirhat district on the banks of Teesta and floods through Rangpur. Apart from this, a flood occurs from the hilly rivers of the Sylhet division and Chattagram and Chattagram Hill Tracts.
According to the Flood Forecasting & Warning Centre, the risk of flooding is high in the Kurigram district and Chittagong division by the end of June.
There is a high risk of flooding in the northern region and Chattagram in August-September. Last year, there were three floods in the same basins.
