Halda River is going to declare as “Bangabandhu Biodiversity Exuberant Heritage”
A decision comes to declare Halda River, the largest river of the Rohu fish (Labeo rohita) spices (Crap) breeding ground in the country, as ‘Bangabandhu Biodiversity Exuberant Heritage Halda.’
The decision took place at the first meeting of the National Committee on Biodiversity held in the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (Bangladesh) in its conference room under the chair of the honorable Minister Md. Shahab Uddin.
Ziaul Hasan NDC, Secretary of the ministry, Md. Moniruzzaman, Additional Secretary (Environmental Pollution Control) of the ministry, AKM Rafiq Ahmed, Director General of the Department of Environment(Bangladesh), Md. Amir Hossain Chowdhury, Chief Conservator of Forests (Bangladesh), and representatives of various departments and organizations, including the representatives of Ministries of Agriculture (Bangladesh), Fisheries and Livestock (Bangladesh), Commerce (Bangladesh) and Science and Technology (Bangladesh), were present in the meeting.
During the meeting, the Environment Minister said, “The National Biodiversity Committee constituted under the Bangladesh Biodiversity Act, 2017, will give advice for the identification and declaration of important areas of biodiversity and will give regular instructions on the management of the declared areas.”
“As a result of today’s decision, necessary steps will take to facilitate the breeding of carp in the Halda River, including dolphin protection, pollution reduction, and overall biodiversity and environmental conservation,” he added.
The Environment Minister further said, “According to Article 16A of the Constitution of Bangladesh, the government is responsible for the conservation and development of biodiversity. Besides, the government is also working as committed internationally of the UN Charter on Biodiversity.”
