A call to free all rivers from encroachment and pollution to protect the environment ‍

Bangladesh News: All rivers, including the Buriganga River, should have a consistent flow and be free from encroachments and pollution. The true definition of a river should be established to clear occupied areas, remove encroachments, and make it accessible to the public.

Dhaka City Corporations and relevant authorities must prevent Dhaka WASA from dumping waste into the Buriganga River.

The leaders of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) said these things while inspecting the current condition of Buriganga River. In an initiative of Buriganga Bachao Andolon, Nongor, Bangladesh River Foundation, Nadi Paribrajkadal)( BRTN), Bangladesh Kite Federation, Unnayan Dhara, Coastal Development Partnership (CDP), River Protection Alliance, River and Delta Research Centre – RDRC and GREEN VOICE Jagannath University Branch were observed Buriganga River site visit program jointly.



A rally was held at 11 am on March 23, 2024, in coordination with BAPA and other organizations, demanding that all rivers of the country, including the Buriganga, should be freed from encroachment and pollution. Rally arrives at Sowarighat from Sadarghat Launch Terminal.

After a boat trip on the Buriganga river, the event concluded at Basila Bridge where participants shared their experiences with journalists.

In the chair’s speech, BAPA general secretary Alamgir Kabir urged the people of both sides of the river to organize a movement on the banks of the local river to save the country’s rivers on the International River Day.

BAPA joint editor Mihir Biswas said, “The real definition of the river should be determined, and the rivers occupied by the country should be rescued.” He urged the concerned authorities to ensure that Dhaka City Corporation and WASA waste is not dumped in the river.

Halim Dad Khan, BAPA’s executive committee member, said, “Government must take necessary steps to ensure the rights of rivers as a living entity.” He urged the riverside people to form local riverside movements to save the country’s rivers.

Humayun Kabir Suman of BAPA, called for the protection and preservation of all the country’s rivers, including the Buriganga, on River Conservation Day.

The river of Bangladesh is the life of Bengal, save the river to save the country! He urged everyone to work on this demand. Javed Jahan, a member of BAPA’s executive committee, emphasized the importance of educating school students to protect the country’s rivers and environment.
