Carbon Capture Technology (DAC): A New Scientific Beacon of Hope for Achieving Climate Targets

Despite global efforts to reduce carbon emissions, the rate of global temperature rise risks exceeding the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C limit.

In this situation, by 2026 scientists’ most powerful tool has become not only reducing emissions but also technologies that directly remove the carbon dioxide already accumulated in the atmosphere. This is called Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology.

How the technology works: DAC uses large fans or sorbent machines to draw air from the atmosphere. Special chemical filters then separate carbon dioxide from the air.

  • Mineralization: The captured carbon is liquefied and injected deep underground into basalt rock layers thousands of feet below the surface. Over a few years this carbon naturally transforms into rock and remains permanently stored for millennia (carbon storage).
  • Recycling: Some companies in Europe and Japan use the captured carbon to produce eco‑friendly synthetic fuels and sustainable plastics.

Commercial potential and carbon credits: By 2026 the technology has begun to become commercially viable. International carbon registry bodies such as Verra and Gold Standard now issue high‑value carbon credits for DAC projects.

Large technology and aviation companies worldwide are buying these carbon credits for millions of dollars to meet their net‑zero targets. The world’s largest commercial DAC plants, operating successfully in Iceland and the United States, are examples of this progress.

Limitations and challenges: Despite its promise, the main challenges of this technology are its high cost and large energy demand. If the electricity required to separate carbon from the air comes from fossil fuels, the technology’s purpose is defeated. Therefore, modern plants are powered entirely by geothermal or solar energy.
